Case Study 15

Value-added partner case study No. 15

The problem
A machine shop wanted to maximize productivity while maintaining a high level of product quality.

The solution
Seco-Carboloy of Detroit assembled a Productivity Improvement Team (PIT Crew) to train machine operators, analyze current cutting parameters and review several machining operations. As a result, the team suggested several specific improvement initiatives.

The result
In one operation, the company had been using an indexable insert drill to drill initial holes, then roughed out the hole with an indexable carbide end mill. The PIT Crew suggested helical milling, eliminating the drilling operation. The change saved approximately 40 hours in machining time.
